WHY EMPLOYEES LEAVE ORGANISATIONS? - Azim Premji, CEO- Wipro

Every company faces the problem of people leaving the company for better pay or profile.

Early this year, Mark, a senior software designer, got an offer from a prestigious international firm to work in its India operations developing specialized software. He was thrilled by the offer.

He had heard a lot about the CEO. The salary was great.. The company had all the right systems in place employee-friendly human resources (HR) policies, a spanking new office, and the very best technology, even a canteen that served superb food.

Twice Mark was sent abroad for training. "My learning curve is the sharpest it's ever been," he said soon after he joined.

Last week, less than eight months after he joined, Mark walked out of the job.

Why did this talented employee leave?

Arun quit for the same reason that drives many good people away.

The answer lies in one of the largest studies undertaken by the Gallup Organization. The study surveyed over a million employees and 80,000 managers and was published in a book called "First Break All The Rules". It came up with this surprising finding:

If you're losing good people, look to their immediate boss ..Immediate boss is the reason people stay and thrive in an organization. And he 's the reason why people leave. When people leave they take knowledge, experience and contacts with them, straight to the competition.

" People leave managers not companies," write the authors Marcus Buckingham and Curt Coffman.

Mostly manager drives people away?

HR experts say that of all the abuses, employees find humiliation the most intolerable. The first time, an employee may not leave, but a thought has been planted. The second time, that thought gets strengthened. The third time, he looks for another job.

When people cannot retort openly in anger, they do so by passive aggression. By digging their heels in and slowing down. By doing only what they are told to do and no more. By omitting to give the boss crucial information. Dev says: "If you work for a jerk, you basically want to get him into trouble. You don't have your heart and soul in the job."

Different managers can stress out employees in different ways - by being too controlling, too suspicious, too pushy, too critical, but they forget that workers are not fixed assets, they are free agents. When this goes on too long, an employee will quit - often over a trivial issue.

Talented men leave. Dead wood doesn't

Thank you Sai for sharing this topic and thank you so much Harish for starting this discussion.
The following are the broad reasons on why employees leave organizations:
1. Management: If the Management does not give importance to its people and fail to follow practices of recognizing the talent and upgradation of their skills on continuous basis.
2. Boss: If boss fails to recognize one's importance in a team and when an employee is not being involved in arriving at some key decisions that are being taken pertaining to his department/section/team then the employee feels out of place and started having other thoughts of leaving. And if the boss lacks trust and confidence on his employees and keeps on spying on his people's work and if he doesn't appreciate an employee's work and fails to give credit for the work done and if he is unable to make the employee perform better by inspiring and acting as a source of positive energy then the employee starts thinking of other alternatives.
3. Role clarity: If the role of an employee is not clear and surrounded with lot of ambiguity and lack of proper level of hierarchy are other reasons for which employee gets frustrated and leave.
4. Compensation: If the compensation is not reasonable and is not strictly commensurate with an employe's skills, experience and work out put and if he or she gets a feeling that they are getting only peanuts then they will leave in search of greener pastures.
5.Team work:Lack of team work and giving importance to individuals instead of team as a whole which leads to lack of cohesion and coordianation in a team resulting in individuals getting all the attention by compromising the interests of the team. This leads to lot of heart burn which ultimately makes an employee to quit such a team.
Moreover, the most important thing is that an employee should not be treated just like a cog in a machine. If he or she is being treated like that then obviously he will make up his mind to search for other alternatives.

It is the work culture of the company that affects most.

Normally in large scale industries employees pick up unhealthy behaviour of other colleagues very fast and then it becomes the organization's overall behaviour.

Also managers tend to take away credit of the team member. I totally agree with the topic started by Sai as I have personally experienced it. I am sure most of us have.

You are absolutely right Mugdha and I agree with you in all respects.I too experienced a lot of humiliation in the hands of good for nothing 'bosses' (they do nothing except apple polishing).

"apple polishing" :)

It reminds me of my ex-boss following this technique. We in our team wondered looking at his polishing skills, he was called as "Mr.Fake-ku".

Seriously people without proper knowledge and management skills will become as threat to the co-employees especially for their team.

It is something like "If the management has decided to screw your happiness there is no escape".

Being Partial with the team members, failing in recognizing the right employee, Lack of leadership is also connected with it.

Employee credibility should be given based on his/her efforts or the sweat he/she given in their work.

Showing Discrimination and Harassment’s will de-motivate the Employees to quit the company.

There are many more sensitive areas where people will become victims to quit the company.

If Management is responsible in certain areas for the said topic the employees also play the equal role in it. Not taking their work serious, Lack of understanding their roles and responsibilities, not following the policies and procedures of the company etc…

hmmm..as the topic is open to discus,I would like to read many more practical experience for the same.

Regards
Sabitha

There is only two main reason,

1. Obviously employee switch to better prospectus, and
2. The presesnt employer company policies made exhaust to employee so they
left.

Beside the above there are thousand other reason to, but these two or most commonly seen?.

I thank members who spend time on this as well as left their comments. But as expected, if this was a question as "20 ways to succeed in interviews" or "5 points to be a successful manager" or some copy pasted joke which we have heard like thousand times, I am sure we would have had a better discussion.

Sad, but true.
