Dear All,

I came across this topic in a blog - www.talentequity.in Sharing with you this article written on common situation of today, 'Pink Slip'.

Please share your views and post your comments....

Last week one of my friends Sumit received this awful and not so unexpected news, “Effective today your services are not required. Kindly collect your belongings/ dues by the weekend”.

He immediately called me up with very stressed and frustrated voice and complained about the employer that he has worked with them for more than 4 years now and how they could do that with him!. “Please arrange some interview for me today itself”, he said. I asked him to calm down and suggested him to go home and relax.

These kinds of situations are not very uncommon these days. Getting tensed and frustrated is very obvious. But this is the time where we need to control our thoughts and respond in a cool and mature way.

Some tips what to do after you being laid off:

Be Positive:

Kind of responses like of Sumit is very obvious in these types of situations. Even if this was anticipated, you will go through many thoughts. Some negativity, anger, jealousy, frustration may come but you need to be watchful enough. Don’t let these thoughts hinder in your life. Be positive and think positive. Like there is a saying “Only a calm mind can sail you through the storm.”

Don’t take it personally:

“I have been loyal to the company and still they have asked me to go”. Don’t badmouth or think badly for your employer. That decision might be driven by bad health of the company. So don’t take it personally. The company will move on and you also should move on.

Don’t feel ashamed:

I have one friend who lost his job twice during last six months. So he started his own business and he is doing quite ok in that. If you are laid off that does not mean that you are not competent in you work, it is the end of just one chapter and you need to start new one. After a year you will think that better you lay off, that’s why you are in such a good position today.

Good time for vacation:

When I asked one of my acquaintances after he was unceremoniously dropped, what are his plans. He replied, “Since I don’t have much responsibility so I’ll utilize this break as a vacation and have some fun”. This could be the right time to spend some quality time with your family and plan for the future with a calm mind. So you can think to go for small vacation.

Go through self assessment:

Before going for a job search go through a self assessment. That will help you to put your best foot forward towards finding a matching job. Ask these questions to yourself :

- What kind of job I want?

- In which domain I want to work?

- Should I change my specialization?

Check your connections:

This is the start of the job search. Making a comprehensive list of whom you know and where they are. Get this organized on paper or in Microsoft Excel and start contacting them!

Good luck and do share your story with you

Regards

Pradeep

Hi Pradeep,

good time to get married also, as it requires a break from the office and work so why not utilize recession time more effectively and with this option person's moral will not go down or will not feel blue all around.
Every thing will be positive.
not a joke few of my friends tried this and it proved to be a very good option

Its better to take some time off and think calmly.
Then start searching, maybe they can become entrepreneurs themselves or they can go for a midsized organizations, only thing is that one may have to compromise on salary a little, but its better to take it in a positive way. They can use their Experience and Knowledge in that Co, and can soon climb Career Growth..if at all they have Talent..i think.

This topic is quite similar to what i wrote in my blog for gap in career due to any reason (may be accident, job loss or maternity leave)
I always suggest rather then thinking negative this is the time to show the employers that you have die hard attitude, you are not easy broken material.

you can go for any short term classes related to your job- increases your knowledge and continuity with your work profile

Do some freelancing job, there are many companies offering work on revenue sharing basis, even if you are not getting enough money from that work still you are in touch with market trend, no one can say you are outdated.

Join some NGO or volunteer kind of small ventures to keep yourself mixed, boast up and fresh

You can join some institute and teach there (may be free of cost also) just keep all things in your mind even you will have to study more deep to answer the queries of the students which is surely going to enhance your field knowledge and will make you more confident

you can start online group related to your work profile, there you can ask suggestions, discussions , even start posting jobs which you are searching , it will help to know more jobs as other members will post too, discuss how to crack the interview.

I have few freelance options for those who wanna do scu work.

I guess its hi time companies became more responsible in these days of economic downturn. They could rather bring final benefits for employees before chucking them out of the company.Ultimately neither the employee nor the employer is to blame. Atleast the employer can make the experience an enjoyable one for employees.

The HR guys play a major role in these recession days when they can bring new rules for both the parties. People are only bothered about "WHAT NEXT". So one way of dealing with it is to organise a session where in employer shows their pink slips in rather a mild manner than to thrust it upon any faithful employee in a blunt way. Otherwise they would only be destroying their reputation. employees must never feel that its a "HIRE TO FIRE" situation.
Organizing Stress Relief/ Management program, opening up ideas and ways by which employee can effectively utilize the last days in office for new beginning & better opportunities could be discussed. Also a knowledge sharing meeting would be helpful wherein the affected employees get to share their expereince working in that company with the team mates.
The basic intention of these programs should be to ease out/ neutralise the negative emotions , recessions caused for an individual. Ideas and thoughts from team mates and higher authorities could be shared. Activities for expanding contacts for new job could be build. These activities could be formulated by the HR for employess till his notice period is served.
