With `lasting love' as his mantra, Sri Rama Sene chief Pramod Muthalik on Thursday said dating couples in Karnataka would be forced to

tie the knot on Valentine's Day.

``Love is an emotional and bonding issue. I am not against love. But it should not be confined to one particular day, rather it should be expressed all through the year,'' Muthalik told reporters. Returning quickly to his agenda, he added: ``Valentine's Day is a Western concept and most often celebrated by Christians. We will try to stall the celebrations at any cost.''

The fuss over Valentine’s Day celebration by the self-styled moral police now appears to be getting on Bangalore’s nerves. Clearly unwilling to let themselves face a culture shock of sorts by spoilsports of the Sri Rama Sene who have threatened to ruin the celebrations, youth wings of many parties and student leaders have vowed to keep the city safe and peaceful on February 14.

Progressive voices said they would take on the Sene and not allow them to intimidate students. Who are these people to decide what others should do, they asked. On its part, the ruling BJP said though Valentine’s Day was not our culture, it would not oppose it. The government did not seem to have any new plan of action to counter Sene’s threat.

Valentine's Day paves the way for outraging the modesty of women, he claimed, adding that he has records to prove that 38 girls were raped in Mumbai, New Delhi and Kolkata last year on this day. To register their protest, the Sene would submit a memorandum to governor Rameshwar Thakur, CM B S Yeddyurappa, home minister V S Acharya and Bangalore police commissioner Shankar Bidari, urging a ban on Valentine's Day.

Asked why the Sene was focusing on Valentine's Day, while rape, murders and exploitation of women is an everyday affair in the country, Muthalik said his organization was also working towards that issue. He claimed to have rehabilitated many women in distress. The Sene has been opposing Father's Day, Mother's Day and Friendship Day for the last decade, he said.

On Wednesday afternoon, Rashtriya Hindu Sena chief Pramod Mutalik went into a huddle with his band of supporters and declared war on what he called “anti-Indian” practices. The Sene asked the government, heads of educational institutions and the police to discourage this “Christian practice of celebrating Valentine’s Day’’.

THWARTING V-DAY

* Sene to submit memorandum to government to ban celebrations

* Write letters to colleges, hotels and greeting card shop owners not to promote V-Day on their premises

* Ask colleges to take strict action against students who celebrate

* In Bangalore, to protest before restaurants in prime areas promoting V-Day

WEDDING MARCH

* Tie-or-die is still the Sri Rama Sene's slogan — firming up plans to marry off dating couples, they said it will have to be either the knot or the rakhi

* Sene has formed five teams comprising a number of members

* They will roam around Bangalore, holding a video camera and a turmeric stub

* On spotting young couples dating, they will be forced to tie the knot, not on the spot, but in a temple

* The couples would be taken to a sub-registrar's office to solemnize the marriage

* In case they are brothers and sisters, they will be forced to tie a rakhi

* However, the Sene is silent on married couples. ``In that case we cannot do anything,'' Muthalik said

ROSES AND THORNS

Muthalik's response to Renuka Chowdhury's comments on his bachelorhood and ignorance of love: ``Being a bachelor does not mean that I do not know anything about love. I am born in a cultured family. I love my parents, sisters and brothers. I welcome her to Bangalore on February 14, as she intends to come here.''

However, he did not comment on whether he would accept a rose given by Renuka with sisterly affection, if she were to.

DRESSING DOWN FOR GIRLS?

Girls are free to wear anything they like. I have never commented about the dress code.

QnA: Haven't organizations like Sri Ram Sena only done more damage to Indian culture by projecting it in a conservative manner?

QnA: Does the Ram Sene goons being let off on bail show that the BJP is encouraging their acts?

I really don’t know how to react to this reaction.

It is so sad to see or even hear such things happen in India, a country where everyone speaks of democracy & freedom of thoughts & speech…

What is wrong in celebrating a day which is dedicated to “Love”…

Why do we celebrate other days like children’s day, women’s day, mother’s day…Rakhi’s day? Does it mean we honor & respect them only on that day!?

Why do we celebrate some national days? Does it mean we are respecting our country only for that particular day?

Why do we commemorate the days dedicated to our martyrs or other important people? Does it mean we remember them only for that day?

In today’s world it is very important to learn how to adopt & adapt…we are exposed to different cultures, thoughts, beliefs …knowing, understanding or even practicing those, does not mean any dishonor or negligence to our own culture & beliefs…

Is it really because of the rate of crime?! Open any news paper, any day, you will find so many incidents happening through out the year?! (Unfortunately)

It is also true that some young people get over excited & sorry to say, go out of the way & actually have spoilt the lovely spirit of this day!

If something needs to be done for the negative happenings on this day, it should start from the families, they should explain the importance of the day, history & why is it celebrated, they should be open enough to understand & accept their teenage or young boy/girl…

There should be a mutual understanding, respect & openness between the two generations…which would surely solve a lot of hide & seek, which makes this day so ugly!

Hope to have a peaceful, lovable & ONE world with no criticism on each other’s cultures, languages, beliefs & customs…

Diana

Thanks Rinku for sharing this topic.
Diana, thanks for the elaborate reply. Yes I agree with you when you say we need a ONE world where we would not have to worry about whose God is better and whose customs are good or bad. We have had too many jokers telling us what we need to do in our lives.
The first time I heard the name RAM SENE is when these guys became MEN, apparently beating up defence-less girls. I never heard of anything good that this particular outfit had done before this for the society. Today with elections nearby, they have mushroomed like a seasonal business, setting up their shop and trying to hog lime light. What are the 5 things that Ram Sene has done for the society ? I was googling on Ram Sene and apart from their brave act in Mangalore, I didn’t find anything significant. The problem with outfits like this is not them, but the establishment which goes soft on them because of their political patrons. If it had not been a BJP government in Karnataka, am sure Ram Sene office would be empty throughout the year because there is nothing they can do then. Talking of BJP, here is a national level party which claimed to build Ram Temple throughout their existence, but could not do it when they were in power, and now again is talking of building it. What do they think we are ? Honestly who cares if there is a temple or a mosque when lakhs of people are losing their jobs and thousands of people ago food-less each day. Is that an issue we need to even think of ? What good would building a temple or a mosque at a particular place fetch the citizens ? It is nothing but the political cheapos trying to divide us again, in terms of caste. They have already divided us time n again, they are trying it again. Because of such vote-bank politics we have reached this stage. How else do you justify a Mayawati wanting to be the PM of the country with all but 30-35 MPs in a House of 543 MPs ? sick
Coming again to Ram Sene, Mr. Muthalik, if you are so fond of keeping women behind closed doors, why don’t you start with your home, after all, charity begins at home, right ? who gave you the right to interfere in others lives ? Our constitution guarantees each citizen the right to practice any religion and you are NO ONE to stop us. If I want to celebrate a Valentine’s day, its my bloody wish. Its none of your business. Have you ever heard the word Constitution ? I doubt it. You would need translators and interpreters to understand even 10% of it. If you were educated, you wouldn’t be celebrating what your hoodlums did with women in Mangalore. I understand that you don’t like western culture. To each his own. We respect your decision. Do you mean to tell me that you never had a coke or a pepsi in your life ? Can you ? no right ? Did you always use Indian manufactured products only ? Which TV do you have at home ? Which car do you own ? Clean your home if you are that agitated with western culture. Its because of people like you that our country is not able to progress. Someday, you would feel that MNCs have to be attacked because they are not Indian. People like you, have no agenda in life. Honestly, we educated people don’t hate you, we pity you.
Grow up Mr. Muthalik and cult !!!
By the way, one free suggestion, try joining hands with Raj Thackeray, he is also jobless nowadays. Since no one in Mumbai is giving him any value since he decided to hide under his cot when the Mumbai terror attacks were carried out. I had read that there are 47000 vacancies in the Indian Armed forces. Your people seem to have the necessary experience already in hitting women. Why don’t you motivate them to join the Armed forces ? Atleast their combat skills would be put to good use, that way they would help the nation too.
I want to say something to the media too :
Stop being kiddish about TRPs. It wont get you anywhere. We are growing up as a country and we need you to be responsible. The country can live without you. You had no business airing that footage of Ram Sene heroes hitting women for days together. Don’t sensationalize news. Grow up.

I totally agree with you and Diana. But my question is what next?

All of us have so much of frustration within our selves against these so called Moral Police. No body has got the right to live our life, it is our life and we will live the way we want.. We need to clean our home first, These(Ram Sena) are terrorists in the form of ANTI SOCIAL ELEMENTS. What are these people trying to prove. When we cannot move freely in our so called democratic country, then how do you think we can curb terrorism. The Bajrang Dal and Ram Sene people had announced on the top of the their voices about their plans on V Day… Inspite of that what was the government doing, when siblings were attacked by a mob on valentine day, when a call center was attacked, when a couple was beaten up by the police, why are the Master Minds behind this roaming freely..

Some days back HR Link had posted a forum to send a letter to the prime minister to fight against terrorism. Can we fight together for this cause as well. The government is answerable to us. Quite a few people were actually dreading to go out on Valentine’s Day, because of this fear. It time we had Ramsene and Bajrang Dal in the list of Let and Jud.

I agree with you. Outfits like these should be placed under the FIA's scanner and declared as terrorist outfits. I wish the Indian polity musters the guts to do this. I however, dont see it happening soon, because of our coalition governance, the root cause of all the problems we see in our country today.
