A young man, a student in one of the universities, was one day taking a walk with a professor, who was commonly called the students' friend for his kindness to those who waited on his instructions.
As they went along, they saw lying in the path a pair of old shoes, which were supposed to belong to a poor man who was working in a field close by, and who had nearly finished his day's work . . .
Student turned to the professor, saying: "Let us play the man a trick:
We will hide his shoes, and hide ourselves behind those bushes, and wait to see his perplexity when he cannot find them ..."
"My young friend," answered the professor, "We should never amuse ourselves at the expense of the poor . . . But you are rich, and may give yourself a much greater pleasure by means of this poor man.
Put a coin in each shoe, and then we will hide ourselves and watch how this affects him." Visit: The student did so and they both placed themselves behind the bushes close by. The poor man soon finished his work, and came across the field to the path where he had left his coat and shoes . . .
While putting on his coat he slipped his foot into one of his shoes, but feeling something hard, he stooped down to feel what it was, and found the coin. Astonishment and wonder were seen upon his countenance.
He gazed upon the coin, turned it around and looked at it again and again.
He then looked around him on all sides, but no person was to be seen. He now put the money into his pocket, and proceeded to put on the other shoe; but his surprise was doubled on finding the other coin . . .
His feelings overcame him . . . He fell upon his knees, looked up to heaven and uttered aloud a fervent thanksgiving in which he spoke of his wife, sick and helpless, and his children without bread, whom this timely bounty, from some unknown hand, would save from perishing . . .
The student stood there deeply affected, and his eyes filled with tears.
"Now," said the professor, are you not much better pleased than if you had played your intended trick?"
The youth replied, "You have taught me a lesson which I will never forget. .. I feel now the truth of these words, which I never understood before: "It's more blessed to give than to receive."
If you want happiness... For a lifetime - help someone.
My grandmother had recently died and I was packing some of her clothes to send to a shelter...when I looked on the window of my apartment and saw a thin, wrinkled old lady who was resting on a bench outside our block of flats.
It was cold outside and she wasn't dressed properly, so I hurried to pick a coat from my grandmother's clothes. I packed some food too in a haste so she won't dissapear. Before leaving the house, I found myself asking what will she eat tomorrow so I put some money in her coat pocket.
I hurried downstairs and gave her the coat and the food.
She had an old dog and she shared the food with him.
I stood there looking at her: she seemed so small, so tired. I could see her age in her wrinkles and hands, who had marks of hard work.
She didn't say a word, just smiled and left walking slowly, side by side with her dog.
I was thinking she will be happy and surprised to find the money in the pockets...
After that, I saw her many times...she just came by my block once a month, stood there on the bench waiting if I see her. She was wearing the same coat, walking the same dog. Every time I saw her I gave her food. She never said anything to me, except for one warm hand shake and a whispered thank you once.
Two years ago she was waiting for me to come...her dog died and she told me that she is all alone. She said she had only me to talk to. She cried as I took her hands in mine.
I wanted to give her something to eat and give her some money.
She said she won't be needing them anymore, cause her dog isn't anymore to share the food and her coat has broken pockets...
I saw her two more times and made her eat something each time....and then never again.
From time to time I think of that old and poor lady and I cry, for her, for my grandmothers who no longer are here with me, for all those people who live and die as she did - alone, having no one to share their pain, their happiness, their last moments...

Hey Claudia.. u sure are a treasure, a blessed angel to this world.. u not jus made an old woman feel loved and wanted but also fed both her and the old dog and never expected anything in return :)
I am glad we are friends..... God bless u and i really wish this world wud have more peopl like u... This surely inspires me to be more like u :)
It was all that I wanted, to give her a small pleasant surprise...nothing to praise me for.
I also thought she deserves someone to remember her and share a moment of her life with others ... a hard working person, with white curly hair, small sparkling eyes, skiny body, slow walk, like the burden of the whole world was on her shoulders,...good enough to share what little she had with her only buddy - her dog.
Hi Claudia!
We do see lot of people everyday and we cannot help all even if we wanted to do so.This could be a small gesture to you which speaks more about your kind heartedness but it meant a lot to that poor old lady and her buddy.
Thank you Claudia for that magnanimous humanitarian gesture which goes to prove that humanity is still alive in this world in the form of people like you.
Claudia.. Appreciate your coming out in pubic and sharing such a wonderful event of your life. Very few people dare to do it. Your act being a reality is an commendable effort. You were able to make atleast one person smile on this planet and may good wishes from her help you through out your life.
