Web cam is a very popular to communicate with people. In the past, the most famous method was telephones. But now, web cam has come forward and has replaced most old methods. Specially, communicate to someone in another country, web cam is very popular.
In Asian countries, computers and Internet is rapidly used by especially young generation. Everyone has at least 3 – 4 internet facility providing centers. Mobile phones have internet access. Internet or web cam is not expensive or rear any more.
Let’s look at the businesses now. What is the technological adoption in the business? In IT industry and telecommunication industry, most of new technological applications are used. But other industries have not give so far to adopt IT related facilities yet. But there are areas which IT / web cam can be used.
Eg:
Construction – Engineers can evaluate, check sites whenever necessary using web cam.
sales – dealing with a difficult customers , to check branches and shops managers can use web cam
In business context also, web can / video conferencing is not popular. But as I think, in the future, business will turn to adopt new technological advantages. IF national policies and business styles change, IT applications will enter businesses much more. When analyzing the benefits and applicability, human resources management field is one of the fields which can take more advantages from video conferencing.
Key performance areas of vedeo o conferencing / web cam in HRD
1. Recruitments: Why we can’t conduct at least the 1st interview using Skype? Most foreign consultants / overseas employers conduct interviews using web cam. When interviewing a candidate who is very far from the organization, to check whether the applicant has the required knowledge (in a certain field) Skype will be useful.
2. Branch visits/dealing with important matters in branches: Video conferencing can reduce the travelling time. Some times for small matters, we have to travel very far.
3. Day to day operations: To monitor day to day operations, this can be used.
4. Performance Appraisal Interview: HRM can join with the process using web cam. He can evaluate manager’s capability of handling the interview.
5. Other benefits: it can be used to send scanned documents / certificates while talking with the HR Manager.
5-6 years earlier we didn’t use even e-mails to send CV’s, but today every company use mails in the recruitments. In western countries, telephone interviews are very famous.
There are short comings of video conferencing using in recruitment.
Arranging the interviewing schedule is the most important task in Skype interviews. There may be technical errors and other difficulties. But using this technology, HR can get advantages very much.
