Communication Skills....

The single most important skill you have to have in business is to be able to communicate effectively with colleagues and customers. From making sure you're understood to delivering difficult messages to handling conflict, just about everyone could do with polishing their skills to become more effective communicators.

Companies talk about needing better communication skills, but often don't know exactly what that means or they don't know how to go about making it happen.

And without doubt, unless you are a company of one, at some point or another, communication will go awry through no one's fault or intention - it's just the way it happens.

Hello Raveendra,

Congratulations on taking the initiative to improve your communication skills!

Here are some quick thoughts...

THINK IN ENGLISH
We usually tend to think in our mother tongue, and as we speak, we try to translate that into English, almost verbatim. That's when we make many common errors. When you start thinking in English, your clarity of thought (with English words, phrases, etc.) would improve and so would your ability to speak correct English.

READ ALOUD
Read from a newspaper or a magazine, loudly. Do this for an hour every day until you become very very fluent.

One of my friends has done this for several months, regularly. His oral communication and fluency have improved dramatically - from a shy guy to one of the best speakers around.

If it's tough for you to do it for one hour everyday, start with 15 minutes and increase as you feel comfortable. Your throat might pain but continue reading aloud anyway. It would make you very confident and helps you speak to anyone fluently.

SPEAK
Always speak without any apprehensions about what others may think about your English. Speak clearly and slowly, without mumbling or swallowing words. Speak to strangers. Speak to people who knows only English!

READ
Read books and magazines. I suggest Reader's Digest. Or just read anything that interests you, but read regularly.

LISTEN
Listen to Audio Tapes - Motivational, etc. Listen to English programs on Radio.

WATCH TV / MOVIES
Watch good movies and popular English programs on TV.

IMPROVE YOUR VOCABULARY
Look up every new word you come across. Learn its meaning. Understand the usage - read examples and try to build your own sentences with the new word. Pronounce that word loudly. Also, make it a habit to learn 5 new words everyday. I suggest you work with the book (don't just read it, but work with it) "Word Power Made Easy" by Normal Lewis.

Hope that would help for now. More when I get a chance again...

Let's look forward to hearing from more members...

well... i agree with Ramakrishna and Sindhu....

you should continue talking in English with ur friends, colleagues... even if u make mistake.... dont worry.... you will not repeat it again....thats for sure....

dont get discouraged if your friends make fun or dont support u..... remember this is for YOUR own good...so do it .... and dont go back....

one more tip.....

we cant carry our dictionary everywhere... but for sure we have our Microsoft word readily available....right?.... its easy....fast and very helpful...

when u dont know a word... dont just leave it.... go ahead.... type it in word... right click on it....go to synonyms.....u will get so many meanings... which will help u imrpove ur vocab....

I have suggested this to many of our employees...it helps them write better mails... using the appropriate word.....and correct spelling as well....

it really works.... try it out...

wish u all the best....and do let us know about ur progress....

Hi Diana - thanks for the comments and tip!

Yes, the MS word thing works well. Right clicking on a word and using the shortcut Shift+F7 would bring up the synonyms.

Any other specific tips...?

Thanks Preksha! The resource is excellent, includes practical tips. Very comprehensive as well. I suggest everyone takes a look.

Note for other members: It's not a ppt that you need to download... it looks like a Power Point presentation, but it's like any other web page. You can navigate the slides from within your browser window.
