Dear Rajeev and Sudarshan,
In most organisations today HR starts with recruitment. To move into a generalist profile is a dream for most HR aspirants but they get stuck in recruitment irrespective of an MBA in HR. Most generalist profiles if you observe start in a generalist function and are MBA from most reputed universities. there are very remote chances of an organisation to recruit a recruitment manager into a generalist profile.
Firstly, you should add some more certifications to your MBA in HR. One is the ISTD certification in training; probably some courses of NHRD in PMS or Comp and Ben. Develop a core network of professionals in the domain.
Secondly, you neednot get into an organisation only to be a generalist HR; you may look at good HR Consulting firms like watson wyatt and so on; they are many like that- seek an opportunity with them. do a thorough research on such firms and start applying. after a considerable stint with them you can get a good corporate position.
I think connecting with right people in the network helps quite a bit. try to be available at various forums develop network and i am sure that you will get a good position as a generalist.
wishing you all the very best,
