FACING TOUGH TIMES

Dr Samir Parikh

Hindustan Times (Delhi edition)

Recently we have seen an increased number of young people coming for counselling related to work issues, with an increase in stress first, due to the recession and then with the latest happenings involving a top IT company What has happened is that more and more young working people have started having doubts about their future.

Some are worried that they might not have their due appraisals, that their finances might be adversely affected as they have taken loans. Many others are insecure about their jobs. Others are struggling to find jobs, and some have been handed the pink slip... This list keeps on increasing every day.

The most basic issue that we bring up in counselling is to ensure that the individual doesn't blame himself or herself for what is happening now and doesn't lose hope. Self blame and feelings of hopelessness do not only make matters worse but also lead to personal disharmony and serious consequences. This is what we keep emphasising - no matter what, do not take this personally, it's not your fault.

Do not feel there is no hope left, for this phase, too, is going to pass. In these times, each person needs to try and balance life even more, ensuring that personal life is not compromised. It doesn't matter whether you can or cannot eat in an expensive restaurant and whether you buy your favourite branded clothes. What matters is that you spend time with family and friends, be a support to them, and take support from them. A normal, happy personal life would take a lot of pressure away

It would help you maintain a healthy life and give you the strength to face a stressful phase, till better times come. Also, you need to be organised at work. Give hundred per cent. Do not lose motivation and maintain a healthy work environment. Don't be cynical, and do not let office morale down. If it's not your fault, it's neither your boss’s nor colleague's. So, now that these are tougher times, be a more cohesive team. Maintain a healthy lifestyle, and don't forget to enjoy the good moments. Believe in yourself, and have faith, these times have come upon all of us. If we all give our best, we will emerge stronger and more capable individuals.
