Soni Jagadish working with Nokia Company in Bangalore committed suicide on Friday 26th September 2008 citing harassment by her seniors as the reason for the extreme step. In her suicide note, she mentioned two Managers Teja and Sachin of harassing her and causing lot of mental trauma. The police have charged both the managers under IPC 306, abetting sucide. Both the managers are absconding since her death.

Soni Jagadish hails from Mysore and her father works as a Central Government employee. Soni was a very ambitious girl and wanted to make it big in Bangalore. She was staying in Jayanagar IX block, Bangalore. She did not report at work on Friday, 26th September and her cell phone was also switched off. Her colleagues and friends contacted her father and with the help of the police when they break open her house, they found her hanging. There were suicide notes on the floor, addressed to her parents, her brother and her close friend Venkat. Seems like there was yet another note accusing the managers, where she said she was harassed because she refused to entertain the guys’ team. Police are investigating as to what exactly she meant by that and questioning all colleagues and friends. Police have further sealed her cubicle so that no evidence can be tampered. She was working Nokia Branch Office in Prestige Tech Park in Devaravisanhallai.

On Monday, members of Karantaka Rakshana Vedike (KRV) staged a dharna in front of the Nokia Office demanding compensation of Indian Rupees 1 Million for Soni’s family. Praveen Kumar Shetty from KRV said that the management has showed the “Order of Dismissal” to those managers and has agreed to pay compensation to the family of Soni.

Both the managers are missing and Police said since they did not present themselves and clarified their stand, they think managers are absconding and have really harassed the employee. The management of Nokia Company are extending full support to the police for fair investigation.

The cases of harassment at workplace are on rise and many go unreported fearing loosing job or other social abuse. Only when the case goes this extreme do these matters come into picture. High time the company management should look into the matter of ensuring safe working environment specially for the women section.

I totally agree with you Rajkumari. But I would like to go one step beyond and say that its not just women alone who need a fair atmosphere at work, but also men. I have seen some of the worst kind of female bosses who literally and practically toy with the careers of men and women who report in to them.
I strongly feel that the systems and processes of the organization should be mature enough and ensure transparency at all levels should be maintained. Also it helps to have a highly responsive HR Generalist team who are proactive in addressing such issues when brought to their notice. It takes care of such harassment at work to a large extent.

Cheers !!!!

Hi as far as my views are concern , the companies should have lady HR to listen their problems and solve it accordingly.

The management should also make strict rules and regulatons that who ever teases the fellow employees should taken disciplinary action against them .

The women employees also take note of one thing, if their is any problem with ur senior colleagues r mangers inform to the concern management and try to see that they get the punishment .And see that ur name is not disclosed .Other wise there is a chance that they will take revenge on u.
And most Importantly don't fear of any one take the support of family members on this issue .

Dare to face the problems and try to solve them.

Death is not the solution to the problem .

HI,

thanks for the response I completly agree that death is not the solution.

I hope as HRs we all should take these matters seriously and we should have a survey done in our organisations reagding such matters. Its not only women who face such problems but also men so i strongly feel that one should not keep quite and give the other person one more chance. Instead we shoudl voice it out and solve the problem.
