When you first start a new job, one of the most important things for you is making all the right decisions and impressing those above you. As you progress through your career, there are many things you can learn from your superiors that will help you when you get promoted or switch jobs.
1. What Type of Manager You Want to Be
As you advance, you will more than likely encounter many different types of managers along the way. Learn from each manager you have and morph yourself into the type of manager that you would like to be. You will be able to learn a great deal from each one, especially about how you should treat people.
Do not be one of those people that says “I will never do that when I’m a manager,” but once you get promoted, you instead turn around and treat people the same way. Make sure that when you get promoted you remember what it was like to be at the bottom and treat everyone underneath you the way you wish you had been treated. Not every manager is bad; you may have even had a manager that you want to be very similar to!
2. Different Ways of Doing Things
Although we all get set in our routines, those above you are always looking to find new ways of teaching and simplifying the way things are done. A manager’s job is to teach you and hope that you will learn and get promoted. Listening and learning from your manager can help you a great deal throughout your career. There is a reason that they are in the position that they are today. Although you can do things differently to your manager, it is definitely best to have an open mind when learning new ways of doing things.
3. What Motivates You
Without motivation you will struggle in any career you try regardless of how good you are at the job. You need to find what motivates you and with a good manager they should be able to help you with this motivation. Some people strive off of constructive criticism while others need both positive and constructive feedback. Everyone is different and depending on how your manager treats you then you will be able to realize what you are missing or what really keeps you going.
Learning from those who have been your boss in the past or present can definitely help shape who you will become. One of the greatest things you can remember when you get promoted and become a manger yourself are what you loved about your managers and what you would have changed if you could. Your superiors within your company can teach you a great deal, you just have to be open-minded and willing to learn.
