In many of Wordworth's poems, we come across a character named Lucy Gray, who, it appears, that the poet was in love with and lamented her death.
It seems Lucy died very young. At what age, we cannot make any inference from his poems. Some poems suggest that she died between the ages of childhood and adolescence; others suggest she was a young maiden whom he loved and she died in the age of her prime youth.
Whether Lucy was a real person or not, we do not know. Was she someone from his past who died but who had a different name and he used the name Lucy to refer to her?
Or was she just a literary device he used to channel his sadness about life by romanticizing about an idealized character?
We do not know.
But there are five poems that first appeared (and later a few more) in one anthology that had reference to her. These are called the 5 Lucy poems.
This one, a slumber did my spirit seal, is one of the five. I have got a previous one out of the 5 already published. It is called 'She dwelt among untrodden ways,' and you may find it on the voice page on my website (http://sathyaish.net/voice)
This is a short, two-stanza poem and I offer a brief commentary before reading the poem explaining the two stanzas.
I am sure you'll love them.
