Many of us are MBAs..if not then well-read is the word..

All of us read or else are interested to read books which are inspiring(motivational or self-improvement kinds).

We may not read all of it...because of time or other constrains...but most of us do flip the pages and make mental notes of all the "inportant points".

Do we actually even for a single day try to implement what all we have read??

Do you???

Tell me about your experiences if you did and for how long,if you have benefitted even little ...

Even if you have not(that means you are one of my kinds...) then also tell me about it and the reasons for lackings...

Waiting for your responses....

Emma being an MBA dosen't mean anything, your education has to be blended with experience then only it can turn out to be fruitful and about the topic its very correctly said, even I fall in the same category, but at times I feel you cannot just follow wats written, coz people write out of their experiences or due to some standards, you have to follow the standards but for other things you have to do an analysis as per your conditions and situations and then decide on the same as things can be different at everybody's ends. Hope you agree to that.

Hi, This is a very good discussion.

I won't say that 100% Theoritical is matching the Practical. But almost i am implementing what ever i have learnt in MBA in my company. This is Purely relates to me.

As a MBA(HR&Marketing) guy, i am having experience on HR & Marketing Fields. And i will tell u how i have implemented the concepts.

Coming to Marketing you have Research Methodology, Segmentation and maily 4P's(product, price, place Promotion and People). These i have used to develop my Business.

We will run the company basing on the Business Laws only(Companies Act, 1956, like Memorandum,Articles of Association and Agreements).

Coming to HR, all the Core HR activities (Performance Management, Training, Payroll etc.., we have different methods to adopt in our company).

Recruitments also will match 95%.

So i can confidently say that i m using my subject almost 95% in my work environment.

Hi Nitin & Emma,

I totally agree what nitin has said on this topic as we have seen many a time that what we have studied is not applicable when we put in practice. Therfore a blend of reading, understanding, experience and above all situation is very very important to practice what we read.

I hope i am able to justify my answer.

Regards,
Ekta Chaddha

I normally don’t write on any of the pop ups in this site, but when I have seen this topic it was like irresistible for me to stop myselfâ€Â¦

Lets pick up some HR jargons and discuss:

Employee engagement: - What all companies are doing today for employee engagement apart from BPO’s and some IT companies none of the company is serious about it. Or you can count in some upcoming companies, which are trying to bring in a new culture.

And just imagine an HR person what he/she is doing for this activity? Just keeping a tab on Employees Birthdays, service Anniversaries, Logistic services, Preparing good canteen menu. Working as a mere facilitator. Sending mails for Induction Purpose, maintaining data on Excel Sheets. How many employees came in, how many resigned, preparing some nice PPTs on attrition trends, trainings, recruitments etc and just doing eye-washing nothing else.

Training effectiveness: -

How many companies carry on post and pre-training assessment activities and if they do, how many are doing this activity religiously. Are we following those big models of training, which we studied during our MBA classes? Trainers coming in for training sessions and fooling around all participants. Linger on Psychometric testing of participants for two days discuss with about their scores, use some big and goody- goody HR jargons and make their money. Very few are there who really put in their heart while training.
Performance appraisal: - It is a mere salary revision exercises not the same we use to read in books that higher the performance higher will be the reward.

Change management: -

I believe not to write for this thing, you people very well know when, where and how much do we apply the principals of change management. Some times I sit and laugh whenever I get back to these books of change theories. Its not that it is not applicable but talk in Indian context ????????????

Being HR professionals what we are doing. Just maintaining data on Excel Sheets, making good PPTs, filing in some reports that too in best presentation mode. That’s it. Its not that we can-not do any thinâ€Â¦ WE CAN !!!!!!! but it can only be possible when we will be treated as an important resource for the company and when this TAG of SUPPORT function will be removed from our head.

There is much to write and much more to say, my motto is not to pass on my negativity on to others. But if we will go on ground realities and introspect we will feel somewhere what I said I truth.

There are two aspects to it:

Formal education <=> Application in the job:
Some people get jobs that allow them to apply what they learned in college. But most people don't. It varies across several industries and job functions.

Reading non-fiction books <=> Application in life:
We read many books that ask us to do this and to do that... we like it and get excited about it (assuming they're great books, recommended by experts).

People who successfully apply what they learned from books would end up being successful.

People who fail to apply (for whatever reason) wouldn't be as successful.

Just my two cents!

I do agree with Ramakrishna, implementing words of experienced people. Though at the same time those experiences do vary depending on situations in every organization. Hence implementation is possible at every stage and level though results comes after some time as the implemented things do take time get digested by many people.

I have experienced the same.
