As part of revamping the front-end of its consulting business to sell services more effectively, India`s IT firm Wipro Technologies plans to add about 300 consultants by the year-end. The company has a team of 1,180 consultants for various domains and verticals, reported Business Line.

T.K. Kurien, President, Wipro Consulting Services, Global Programs and Strategic Initiatives, said, "We are effectively re-hiring our front-end (staff) and are creating a new consulting group. The mandate of the consulting group is to change the face of Wipro. It will also change the quality of deals coming in."

The consulting practice of Wipro has been seeing some traction in the market and the company plans to build on that to create an impact. "The idea was to lead in with consulting so that we create downstream projects. Our ambition is to become the largest design shop in the world," Kurien said. Wipro plans to have a team of some 1,500 consultants by the year-end. The company also plans to effectively tap the downstream revenues from the spurt in short-term transformational projects that it has seen in the past two quarters.

Thanks to economic downturn, customers are looking at short-term transformational projects that can help them reduce costs and operate efficiently. Unlike Infosys and TCS, Wipro does not disclose its consulting revenues separately. Infosys earns about a fourth of its revenues from its consulting subsidiary, while TCS earns about 3 percent.

Stating that the company`s consulting business has to evolve, Kurien said Wipro was placing bets on geographies such as Australia and Continental Europe to offer consulting services.
