The good son of his mother
Sat, Mar 7 09:00 PM
This is a story I read in my childhood and it had a great impact on me. I want to share it with HT readers.
A small village in Rajasthan near Ganganagar had a well at its centre that was its only source of water. Women used to draw water from it and the villagers in general would sit around and converse.
One afternoon when some women were drawing water, a well-built boy went by. His mother was drawing water from the well just then.
On seeing him, some people commented, "He is a great pahalwan, how strong he is! He is Maa ka saput, `a good son of his mother`. The boy told his mother, "Come home soon and warm some milk for me.
I`m thirsty after all that exercising." And he went on home.
A few moments later another boy passed by. His mother was also drawing water from the well.
Seeing him, the villagers said, "He is a very intelligent boy, the school-topper- a good son indeed, Maa ka saput". He went off, telling his mother to hurry home and give him food, as he had to study.
After a few minutes, a third lad came by. He too saw his mother drawing water from the well.
He must have been an ordinary boy as nobody had anything to say about him. He came up, picked up one heavy waterpot with one hand and holding his mother`s arm with the other to give her support, quietly took her home.
An old sadhu saw all this. He asked the villagers, "Tell me now, who is the Maa ka saput?" The villagers nodded in understanding.
What you are is of no value as an intellectual, a sportsman or achiever. What you are to others alone matters.
And among others, your parents are very important. If you take care of your old parents, make them feel secure, respect them and love them, their blessings will shower on you and you will be the true Maa ka saput.
