NEW DELHI, INDIA: Power of the people, apart from innovation and investment in infrastructure can transform the country, believes the panel that debated `Ideas for new India from MIT` at Emtech India here.
"I envision a very confident and prosperous India in 2030, if we are able to decrease the disparity between the fortunate few and others in the country," said Arun Firodia, founder and chairman of Kinetic Group.
The session was moderated by chairman of CyberMedia group, Pradeep Gupta.
Elaborating on his vision of India in 2030, chairman of Godrej Group, Adi Godrej said, "I am very optimistic about India. We are very innovative and we should use it to our advantage. We can, in fact leverage this slowdown to our advantage by investing in infrastructure, which can lead to strong growth. I would also like to stress that education is of prime importance. We need to change the model of education currently prevalent in the country."
While democracy is one of the country`s biggest achievements, it is important not to just have an illusion of democracy, felt associate professor at MIT Media Lab, Dr Ramesh Raskar.
"Power of people can bring about a major change in the country but it is important that it shouldn`t become the power of few people. Technology can empower people to connect with each other and can give voice to the silent majority. It is important to use technology to give power to the people," he added.
The panelists highlighted that there are a number of challenges which the country needs to fight to leapfrog to the next level. The biggest challenge is to solve the problem of massive unemployment.
Agribusiness and bioenergy are the two areas which have a lot of potential to generate jobs. Artificial rain technology can go a long way in solving our agriculture problems, felt Firodia of Kinetic Group.
"There has never been a dearth of investment but execution which is the problem area," emphasized Godrej.
Technology can play a crucial role in changing the face of the country. IT and mobile technology are going to be the key enablers in India`s growth story, believed Raksar of MIT.
