Management guru C.K. Prahalad foresees an increased opportunity for outsourcing in the wake of global economic meltdown and the end of the crisis in about 18 to 24 months.

Talking to a group of journalists, Prof. Prahalad, who teaches in the University of Chicago, USA, said that there were actually two hypotheses coming up in the wake of global consolidation of financial sector with mergers and acquisitions. “This can either reduce the outsourcing of work, or, maybe, they will have to increase outsourcing. For reducing the costs, outsourcing may become more attractive.” The economic slowdown provided a great opportunity for researchers to formulate strategies.

Asked if no researcher could foresee the financial crisis, Prof. Prahalad said that researchers were like mirrors and they would only reflect on what was actually happening. “The role of a researcher is not to predict. It is for managers and regulators to foresee the crisis situations. Researchers don’t provide easy prescriptions.”

Prof. Prahalad said that now companies were competing and at the same time collaborating. For instance, Airtel was planning to expand its reach to 250 million people in India, while it had already reached out to 100 million of them. For this, most mobile operators were coming together to share the infrastructure like cell towers. The Strategic Management Society (SMS) would be conducting a special conference at the Indian School of Business for three days from Friday with 450 participants from 120 international and 45 national business schools.

The conference theme would be ‘emerging India – strategic innovation in a flat world.’ He said 15 CEOs of top companies and 100 India and 75 international researchers and Deans of 60 business schools across the globe would participate.
