Noisy Silence

Don’t you know that the most important thing in communication is hearing what isn’t being said?
Yes, silence speaks.
Silence gives consent.
Silence is more powerful than a torrent of empty words.
One’s body language is a powerful form of non-verbal communication. It speaks all about one’s attitude and feelings.
Language and silence are effective tools of communication. Very often we do use language for silence and silence for communication.
Are we not tongue-tied and dumbfounded on some occasions? On such occasions silence speaks.
If we go a step further, language in reality is incapable of establishing true communication between two persons.
Language alone cannot communicate. One’s tone as well as the emotional colour of words is more important than the textual meaning of words.
Moreover, communication through language is never genuine. While conversing with others, one always runs the risk of exposing his weaknesses and drawbacks.
It is often said that with language we often cover up and evade what is true!
Therefore, language is deception! It is an effective tool to set up a smokescreen around reality!
When all is said and done, what matters most in conversation is silence, not speech.
Silence is eloquent and meaningful and it can convey more than what millions of words are capable of communicating!
Here is an instance of a person who could have saved his skin if he had made use of the language of silence.
One young man called Mani fell ill just after his marriage.
When he recovered from the unknown ailment, he stumbled on a shocking discovery – He had lost his hearing ability!
In the midst of marital bliss, he decided against telling his wife that he was stone-deaf.
He lip-read his wife and managed to communicate with her.
As she did not know all about her husband, she left his long spells of silence to the vagaries of his nature.
One fine morning, they received a telegram.
There was bad news – Mani’s father-in-law had fallen ill.
His father-in-law was a moody old man who flared up at the slightest provocation.
Mani sent his wife first to her village promising her that he would join her in a couple of days after completing his work in his office.
A month passed by. There was no news from her husband.
She sent a telegram asking him to start immediately.
Mani collected his courage and got ready to face the situation.
He imagined beforehand stock replies for the usual queries asked on such an occasion.
When he reached his father-in-law’s dusty little village, his wife was not at home.
His father-in-law was in his bed casting a vacant look at the ceiling.
On seeing his son-in-law, the angry old man turned his face towards the wall.
Collecting his courage, Mani shot the first query.
“How are you, father-in-law?”
“Oh, you have come here at last after ages! And you are asking me how I am! How am I? – I am dying!”
Guessing that his father-in-law was telling him that he was better now, Mani gave him what he thought of as the appropriate response.
“That’s great news father-in-law. Keep it up.”
The old man’s blood boiled in anger.
“What medicine are you taking?”
“Nothing but cow dung.”
That is a wonderful drug. Do take it without fail.”
The old man groped for his walking stick kept in the corner.
“Who is your doctor, father-in-law?”
My doctor?... Lord Yama!” (God of Death in Hindu mythology)
“Yes, I have heard his name. He is indeed a famous doctor. You are in safe hands. Your days of suffering are really numbered. He will deliver you soon.”
The old man caught hold of the stick and chased his mocking son-in-law.
But for the intervention of Mani’s wife who arrived just in time, he would have been severely caned!
Yes, speech is silvern but silence is golden!
