First Impression Impact – Lesson for Corporates!

Views 4 Views    Comments 0 Comments    Share Share    Posted by Rana Vikram 13-11-2008
When a common man’s proprietorship firm transforms into a company and then into a corporate entity, it gradually get drifted away from the human touch and feel of the common people, despite being a claimant of numero uno in all of its business process. The vision, mission and values were introduced to remain close to the common man aka the customer aka the consumer, but as the so called corporate branding being established. All that started with an individual’s effort, loses the grip of its core. It has been observed many a times, when individuals, their agendas, their companies take a shape of an established brand, they all become unapproachable, inaccessible for a common person.
Corporate bodies forget one thing in particular, and that is ‘Professionalism’. I am not talking about good or bad, best or worst, ethical or unethical but ‘The Professionalism’ in its pure form and sense. These so called corporate bodies also forget another virtue, the humanness, or the human part of their businesses. They may take pride that they are number one due to their brand image, product quality, end to end services, advertising, revenues, turnover figures, etc but they forget that their existence is also due to an another kind of factor and about which, they never-ever think. I call this factor ‘First Impression Impact’. This factor is not at all about the product and services, nor is it related with the direct consumer or about being the customer itself. It is a concept of an impression which really makes or breaks the image of any individual, business firm or corporate body at Human Level, where the first contact happens actually.
Just take look around, you will find big names surrounding you. But have you ever thought what kind of impression it leaves on your psyche, when you approach them for the first time as an individual, as a common man, as a human being. Generally, 90% of the times it is pathetic. You heard a lot, watched a lot but it is the first contact which matters a lot, and this contact makes you feel good or bad about it. The first contact, the first word, the first person representing the corporate body leaves the first impression. Corporate body may be whatever it claims to be, but the real image got created at the first encounter. In marketing, all of us must have read or heard about a technique called ‘word of mouth’, which is a sure form of publicity in brand establishment. Now-a-days, it is also referred as ‘Recommendation Practices’. Just imagine the impact of this WOM publicity, even if it is on a very ignorable level. Think over it, what kind of impression these corporate are making (unknowingly) on the minds of the common people, who are actually NOT common as considered. They are the actual force, the backbone of the establishment of those corporate. You may ask How? Then the answer is: The investment on the financial front (IPOs, Shares etc), usage of commodities (purchase of products and services) are performed by this common man.
Here, I would like to mention that there are some corporates, who may brag about the social responsibility (as it is a way to show themselves as the ‘good corporates’ to the masses), but are they really responsible enough? Are their efforts effective enough to create the actual impression on the common man?
For example, after knowing that any xyz corporate body is performing their corporate social responsibilities and someone feels like approaching any individual, who is a representative of the corporate body in one form or the other, do you think he will be able to do so? A big no! Trust me, you will not be entertained, moreover, you will not be even let to enter in their premises. And the worst part is, nobody will even bother to speak, help or assist you. Data shows that corporates spend huge amount of money on public relation activities to reach the common man but these corporates are least concerned if a common man chooses to reach them. And that actually is going to make a lasting impression, but there is no responsibility on the human grounds. This may be happening because the corporates may have lost their Visions, drifted away from their Missions and forgot about the essence of the core Values. Even the employees working with these corporates loose their human touch and even their humanness as they get into the inhuman system. They call themselves Hardcore Professional, Corporate Citizens, Global Villagers and what not but no one is a common enough to be a man . . . . . . . . . . . . . . a human being!
In my humble opinion, these corporates should work towards the invoking of the humanness of their existence and should majorly concentrate on the factor of ‘First Impression Impact’, if they are really concerned. The day these corporates and hardcore professionals will realize the importance of ‘First Impression Impact’, then there will be no job-cuts, then there will be no attrition, then there will be no hostility and protests, then there will be no occurrence of cut-throat competition, then there will be no shortage of resources. And when the businesses will be initiate by keeping the objective of Universal Benefit and Humanness as its core, then everyone will achieve peace, balance, and harmony – the actual necessity of human life.
