Personally i feel and this is what ive been doing in the past 5 yrs. Designation - (Position) is very important and then the salary.

I started as a Mgt Trainee, moved to next comp as Sr Exe HR and next level as AM HR and i want to be in this position for 3-4 yrs and then move into the level of Manager HR.

During my stint as an Sr Exe HR, i used to get interview calls for the same designation, which I rejected.

Ask your friend to have a vision as to what he likes and wants to do. If the company is not giving the designation and giving a good salary, and if he accepts it, tomorrow when he wants to move out, this will always have a question in the prospective employers mind - why he has come down from a level etc

At the same time if its a US co, they have difff designations which is accepted universally.

End of the day, it his decision.
