well my answer says : H.R. Generalist means

the basic Human resource job of doing any H.R. related jobs by assisting the superior H.R. Managers whereas the same if its for a Core H.R. profile then it means that person would only work in that Core part of H.R. like

1) Recruitment & Selection

2) Training & Development

3) Human Resource Development

4) Human Resource Auditing

5) Performance Appraisal

looking forward to your view for the same

Hi Rekha,

A generalist profile generally doesn't include recruitment and now a days T & D is also considered as separate department.

Rekha,

Usually a Core HR professional is somebody who performs a Generalist role. Some organizations have a different take on this and also assign on-boarding and payroll responsibilities to a core HR person.

Per se, the following would be the professionals under HR :

1. Talent Acquisition - Recruitment role
2. Talent Management - Generalist role
3. Talent Development - Learning and Development
4. Talent Deployment - Visa processing folks
5. HR Operations - offer letter releasing, on-boarding, employee database maintenance, background verifications, exits, etc.

Some mature organizations have the payroll being taken care of by the Finance team, which is good. Some organizations let the HR Ops person do it.

So, you can see that the classification of roles within HR, can be at best be described as a loosely bound. For example, I am the only HR professional in the company, I would have to do all the roles. In which case, all these definitions go for a toss.

Cheers !!!

Thanks a lot for your reply Harish, since even I had this doubt.

Of course, there are different names given for the same "role" by different organisations...

But as you have mentioned at the end of your answer....since many responsibilities are taken care by one single person....the actual "name" for each process & role has been taken for granted!!! or some times, even, forgotten....

Thanks alot for clarifying my doubt ! :)

Hi Harish,

Thanks to you for a clarification on the roles. But do you mean to say a core HR person himself is designated as a Generalist?

Regards,
Sowmya
