Need your valuable suggestion
Type: HR, Report if not a HR topic
Posted 30-10-2008Reply
Hi All,
I'm Sowmya from Bangalore.Currently I'm working for an MNC with 2yrs of experience.I'm currently working for recruitments and willing to shift my vertical. But i have no knowledge of any of the other verticals in HR like compensation/Benifits,payroll, performance management, employee relations. Would seek you valuable suggestions to gain a knowledge about these verticals. How can I learn about them if I have to change my vertical to any of these. I consider that without even the knowledge about these areas It would be difficult for me to look for any opportunities.
Looking forward for your replies.
Regards,
Sowmya
Hi Sowmya,
It is quite interesting to know that, having 2 yrs of exp, u dont have any knowledge on any other processes other than recruitment.
You did not mention in the post what is your educational back ground. I think u r not an MBA.
you have lots of books, internet, training programmes etc. to learn things.
1st thing you should do is, try to gain mimimum knowledge from above sources.
Slowly you get involved yourself with the other HR activities like comp, T & D, Emp relations...in your current co. Learn from your colleagues who are working on these areas. The best way to learn is, ask them. Dont feel shy to ask for help.
once you gain confidence, you come up with new ideas and thoughts, put them in front of your mgmt, definitely they will put you into different roles.
Have a great learning.

Dear Swomya,
HR is an ocean, you can’t expect to learn and excel in it by getting suggestions in this forum, you should dive into it…that’s the only way through…
As Pradeep said, working in a MNC, for 2 yrs, but it’s a surprise that you have not been involved in other HR roles. (Don’t get us wrong)
1st of all, you can not distinguish recruitment from other HR activities...unless you are working in a consultancy firm, which works exclusively on recruitment…
Well, it’s always good to have a qualification, related to your job profile, e.g. MBA (HR) would be a great asset for your career growth, but it’s not the “essence”
You can excel in this field if you have dedication, zeal to learn different tasks simultaneously, have creative thoughts, be able to judge/understand the needs of the company besides keeping in mind the welfare of your employees, preparing policies which are practical and work out best for your type of organization, if you, being the HR do not have a clear picture about the policies and the reasons WHY are they actually set, then no one else would!!
2nd point, Coming to the areas you need help, please do not be negative, who said that you have no knowledge, you KNOW what you are looking for, and I am sure you are aware of their functionalities too, but you have not worked on them…that’s all…
This needs time, dedication and hard work…no one can stop you growing, if you want to…
The areas you have mentioned, might have a common book definition (which you can find in any HR related book, internet...etc) but they defer from Co. to Co., I can suggest you to go through your Company policy manual, read, understand and judge each policy, from both employer/employee points of view, ask your HR colleagues…
It’s better to start with the following areas, once you are into it, automatically you will get a chance to work on other aspects as well:
-- Attendance / leave tracking / planning different schedules (or) shifts, if you
have any / leave balance policies / keeping a track of employees’ leave
balance- compensatory offs – LOPs ..etc
-- Creating and maintaining the Employees’ Personal Files (Hard copy & Soft
copy)
-- Performance management, again depends on your Co. are you using
90 /180 /360 degree Appraisal? Go through the format which you have,
understand each point, read the feedbacks from the appraiser(s)
Being in the recruitment for 2 yrs, I guess you should be familiar with these:
-- Planning the manpower, short listing, conducting interviews, past
employment Verification, negotiating the CTC/notice period…
-- Designing & preparing Offer Letters / other joining formalities…
-- Verifying the documents required for release of Appointment letters.
-- Conducting Induction Program/Joining Formalities for the new employees
e.g. ID cards, employee codes, bank accounts, arranging required
hardware/software, formal Introduction within the department…etc.
For employee relations:
You need to have ample of patience, since anything to do with people is difficult…they have different thoughts, family/educational/career backgrounds, problems, expectations…etc.
Other characteristics of a capable HR can be:
** Good communicator is the key to mold into a good HR, it helps in
defining/explaining the policies, convincing, negotiating, resolving conflicts…
** Build trust, so that employees confide in you, someone they can rely/feel
comfortable to share their problems, at the same time maintain distance
from them! You can’t be friends nor can be rude !
** Being upfront is not easy but essential for a practical HR… you need to say
NO, when It’s a "NO".
I guess it’s got long enough…
If you have any doubts/clarifications, you can mail me; will try my best to help you out.
Remove the fear and go ahead…nothing is impossible !
Wish you all the best,
Diana

Hi Sowmya,
Firstly accepting that you dont know anything other than recruitment is a great virtue which comes out of an open mind.
With this open mind, now attempt to spend some time with the HR colleagues in your present company and learn about their what they are handling, like back end HR operations, C & B, payroll processing, statutory compliances, employee engagement activities, etc.
As you get some basic knowledge of these concepts, do your bit of reading either from books or articles on the net to know more about them. This way, your acquired knowledge gets deeper and sharper. By doing this, you may find your interest in some specific areas more than the others.
This is a tested and tried out method.......u too can try it out. Ultimately, ur career is ur business. Do take good care to nurture it the way u want.
