HR Zone » Human Resource Management » Is MBA Manditory for HR Professionals.....???
Hello Sanjay
I donot fully agree to your view point. I can give you examples of successful entrepreneurs who have performed far beyond anyones immagination without proper graduation forget MBA _ Bill Gates, Dhirubhai Ambani, Warren Buffet, Laxmi Mittal....etc. Even though these gentlemens are not HR professional the point which I am trying to drive is that just an additional post graduation certificate does not make someone all of a sudden well qualified in field of HR.
HR is more a practical subject then theoretical. It all depends on how matured a person is in his understanding of his organization business and needs and requirement of its employees. How as a team he is able to motivate and mould them into winning culture.
MBA has just been added as an extra filter in the name of recruiting HR professional out of an ocean of people striving to join this field.
I donot feel that MBA is mandatory for HR professionals it is just an added advantage.

Deepak

Hi Deepak,
Impressed by your speech, but i have a doubt, will the MBA Degree really doesnot matter when you go higher and higher in once carrer.
My education background is B.Tech (IT).....but i has lots of intrest in HR so jumped in this field,.........
am a HR - Executive in an MNC...i handle the entire Hyderabad Branch of our company...my profile is totally a generalist HR profile.......i handle Recruirments, advice payroll, appraisals (confirmations and annual both), competency mapping, PF withdrawals, medi claims, employee relations, corporate communiccation, conducting fun at work.....etc......
Now that its a small company i got good experience of all the core HR work......but if i really want to move to a BIG branded company...they will screen totally based on education background......
as i was handling the entire 400+ employee, i got good experience....but still will that be sufficient...
then how could i support my self.......

Hi All,
IS MBA must and should for to become successful HR....
Pls give your inputs...
Jagan
Hey Jagan, MBA may not be mandatory but, in every profession an additional qualification like MBA is very helpful, especially, for career progress.
Let me give you an example of a player from a village side coming into the state and national team because of his talent. He performs very well and gets automatically selected to the national team. Till here, his progress was smooth. Now he is requied to play at National and International level for the country and now he is competing with teams and opponents of different category, strength, techniques and language. Of course, he has crude talent, but he finds it not sufficient to match his opponents overall skills and progress ahead of them. This is just a scenario.
From a recruiter stand point, consider you progressing in your career with your basic qualification, if your company is progressing well and planning to expand the operations where you need to recruit a multitude of skilled and professional workforce. It is where your extra or continuous educations comes handy for you. It is where you will be able to clearly explain the objective and perspective of your management to the future work force in a clear manner through modern techniques.
Theory is much important along with experience. Manage time, Manage Priorities, Manage People, Manage Egos (thats most imp), etc...
I believe the reply is clear.

Dear Deepak,
I agree with you that in-depth knowledge & experience in any field would be greater asset in career progress than having multiple certificates & qualifications.
But the fact is, many organisations count appropriate "qualifications" very important. Actually it is a “policy” for many.
For e.g. a B.Com/B.A/BSc. guy, with no computers in his background would struggle much more than a B.Tech candidate...who has IT as specialisation.
Unfortunately, this is a fact, when there are two HR profiles with similar work experience, but one has a MBA & the other does not... the obvious choice would be the first candidate. This is my personal experience, since I do not possess a “MBA title” yet!
We are not talking about the great self-made legends, as you have mentioned their names, this is about the culture & policy most of the companies follow.
So, as Sanjay had mentioned, we might get a break without MBA, provided you have enough knowledge about different aspects of HR, but having a qualification relevant to your work experience will always give you a better edge to reach the heights.

Hi Jagan....
I think to be very successful in HR, MBA is must to work sincerely for the growth of the employees in the company. Gone are the days when people used to take or work in HR for the reason that they love interacting with people, It is the time when you passionately want to work for development of people......
Managing HR career involves keeping on top of key trends shaping the HR landscape as identified by five core competencies for the successful HR professional :
Change management - the ability to deal with uncertainty and change
Maturity - the stability of performance under pressure
Openness - accepting new ideas and practices
Flexibility - adaptability
Contextual thinking - seeing the big picture within a context of cognitive complexity.

That’s bitter … but fact Deepak.
Agree with Sanjay and Diana .. that, though u hold a relevant exp in HR stream, any Org prefer an candidate holding MBA degree and to add on – in the current scenario they prefer one who have pursued the same on Full-time basis …. This means even the Distance learning is of no value ..
MBA is also considered to be a clause to move up the ladder of organization hierarchy .. one who holds this is being promoted to the next level in jus service span of 1 yr .. personal exp speaks !
