Hi Friends,

"Climate change affects our life. Your Planet needs you-Unite to combat climate change. Reduce reuse and recycle"

Points to ponder

As humanity moves toward the 21st century, we are left with no choice but to redefine the values and principles that underlie our relationship with the Earth. Clearly, a new approach is required.

Creating a Spiritual Culture: The industrial civilisation has brought about an abundance of goods and services to humankind, but also an obsession for materialism and a distortion of human values.

Achieving Environmental Equity: Planet Earth is the common home for all of us. We must all strive to share equitably the benefits and burdens resulting from the use of the environment.

Greening Science and Technology: Science and technology have played a critical role in the development of human history and will be one of the key determining factors in shaping a sustainable future. However, the impacts of technological development and their applications have also become so serious that they threaten the stability of the ecosystem and human society.

Sharing Responsibilities: All members of human society are responsible for maintaining the integrity of the environment as a Whole-Life-System. Individual efforts can be enhanced through building networks within and among all levels of civil society and government, industry and business, and non-governmental organizations (NGOs).

Environmental Education: Education, especially at an early age, has a significant effect on how people form attitudes toward the environment, and is thus crucial. Educational programmes designed to enhance awareness of environmental issues and ethics must be developed and applied at all levels of society through all available and practical means.

International Cooperation: Nations share common responsibilities for preserving Earth's environment. This amounts to active involvement in regional and international cooperative efforts and joint implementation of environmentally-sound policies, while faithfully complying with established multilateral agreements.

Environmentally-Sound Lifestyle: All members of society must cultivate a lifestyle that accepts and is consistent with sufficiency rather than greed and excess. Bearing in mind that Earth's resources are limited, each person must avoid a culture of extravagant material consumption and pursue ways to preserve the planet by improving consumption patterns.

Active Involvement: Individuals are encouraged to participate both morally and politically in all levels in the decision-making process of environmental policies in order to improve the quality of decision-making, avoid corruption, and ensure that their interests can be properly represented.

Role of "Watchdog" and Liaison: NGOs must serve the role of "watchdog" and must be prepared to assess and evaluate policy decisions, and where necessary, propose alternative environmental and development policies.

Environmentally-Friendly Business Practices: The industrial sector must actively apply eco-efficiency principles in order to use less energy and materials for the same amount of output and to reduce emissions and waste. This requires the widespread adoption of environmentally-friendly production technologies, an increased use of recycled materials, and a greater emphasis on substituting goods with services. The financial and insurance sectors must also increasingly direct investment toward environmentally-sound projects.

Interdisciplinary Approach: Science and technology alone cannot resolve the impending environmental crisis. An interdisciplinary approach, which includes other branches of academic endeavors such as the humanities and social sciences, is needed to develop active research programs for a better understanding of the increasingly complicated environmental problems. The key is to recognise that humans and the natural environment are interdependent and part of a larger entity, the "Whole-Life-System."

Nikhil,

"Where there is a will, there is a way". Our love towards nature will make us creative to grow roof gardens or in limited spaces/ in indoors we can grow plants.

Regards,
Manjari

Hi Sri Manjari,

Thanks for posting this news, mentioning the source...

I was amazed to know about so many national parks around India!

Great to see those refreshing pictures & to know these rare animals & plants are been taken care...

It would be a great contribution from all of us, if we could visit, at least the parks which are at our states, the little income they get by our visits would help the authorities to continue their mission...

I think it is the best way to publicise & inform others about it, many may not even know of these parks...like me ! I knew there were few, but not as many as I could find out on this site...

Taking care of environment does not start or stop by planting a tree or growing flowers on our balconies or roofs or even in-door !

* Proper usage of resources :: gas, oil, petrol
* Helping in reducing the pollution, by checking our vehicles & servicing them on time.
* Trying to protect & take care of those few parks (however small) around our residential areas...instead of waiting for the municipality to do so...
* Not to pollute our natural water resources, lakes, rivers, damps...
* Dispose our garbage at the right time, right place...instead of causing a mess.
* Using re-usable objects, environment-friendly & decomposable carry bags.

There are many ways, very simple ones…which starts from YOU & ME…

Thank you for making me ponder on so many ways Srimanjari, I am sure it would be a good reminder for all of us, that we have only one earth which belongs to all of us & generations to come…!

Lets keep something for them too....

Diana

Hi Manjari,
Thanks so much for starting such a great topic...
In this world everyone knows we need to save water, oil, resources etc...
We know we need to plant trees for a better surrounding...
We know we shouldn’t waste electricity, switch off the AC when not in use, and switch off the fan, TV, coolers etc...
We know we should switch off our bikes at the traffic junctions when it’s not our chance and need to wait for a min to cross...
We know we need to follow traffic rules...
We know we need to dump the garbage in the right place, re- use the objects, stop usage of plastic bags etc...
We know we should not drink, smoke, use drugs and ruin our bodies...
We know we need to smile and start our day and bring happiness around us..
We know that its ONE life and we need to LIVE it…
But tell me honestly… how many of us really do what we know??? Knowing is not a problem… doing it is a prob.. : ( Issues like time, family, work, hectic schedules everything come into picture…
So just wanted to say that… Every deed starts from us.. If we do a small part from our end it might actually motivate others to learn from our deeds.. If we just say and don’t do it then it’s of no use… Do you all agree with me ?? let me know…
Manjari thanks again for helping us aware of our responsibilities… maybe we can start working on this from NOW…. : )

Hi Manjari,

In this world everyone ... See Priya's complete reply

Dear Priya,

Thanks for re-writing the points I had mentioned, in your own way!

Thanks for adding few more to the list...

Yes dear, we know that "we know..." but these simple steps do not require a huge sacrifices, does it?

Yes, I do off my bike when I am at signals no matter how short is the time!
I do use paper bags, 90% of the times...& love gardening...

Infact, recently I had an argument with a family at Necklace road for polluting the lake... (for those of you who are not in Hyderabad :: This is a beautiful place surronding a lake in Hyderabad called "Hussain Sagar"...The Hyderabad municipality tried a lot to keep this place clean & green, a place for families to hang around & enjoy an evening) ...unfortunately there are some unethical people who think of only "now" & are least bothered about the way they treat the environment...

We were spending the evening there along with so many other families who had their kids playing around...lovely site to see...what would you do if you saw a person, just taking their food garbage & throwing it right in the lake ! whereas you have so many trash-bins!!!! how many of us would go up & protest it ?? or would you just walk away to avoid fights...

Yes, we need to take the risk, many wont like to be "questioned" or "criticised"... it is not about fighting or arguing, its about defending our rights to "live" & have a healthy place to live...

How many of us protest spitting on the roads???? Sorry, but had to mention this ugly act !

Not only at home, we do save current even at office & ask everyone to take care of it as well, during lunch times you wont find any extra AC/fans on...we do off all the monitors during the nights...

It is not about saving "bills" but saving the Earth for the next generations...

Hope to get more inputs from other members as well, with more points on "how to save our Earth?"...
