A woman repeated a bit of gossip about a neighbor.
Within a few days the whole community knew the story.
The person it concerned was deeply hurt and offended.
Later, the woman responsible for spreading the rumor learned that it was completely untrue.
She was very sorry and went to a wise old sage to find out what she could do to repair the damage.
"Go to the marketplace," he said,
"and purchase a chicken and have it killed.
Then on your way home, pluck its feathers and drop them one by one along the road."
Although surprised by this advice, the woman did what she was told.
The next day the wise man said, "Now, go and collect all those feathers you dropped yesterday and bring them back to me."
The woman followed the same road, but to her dismay the wind had blown all the feathers away.
After searching for hours, she returned with only three feathers in her hand.
"You see," said the old sage, "It's easy to drop them, but it is impossible to get them back.
So it is with gossip.
It doesn't take much to spread a rumor, but once you do you can never completely undo the wrong."
Why is it so easy to gossip and so difficult to talk about a nice, positive thing? Why do we take all the nice gestures for granted never mentioning them and prefer spreading negative rumors?
It's so easy to hurt someone and sometimes so hard or even impossible to repair the damage done...and that in few words, not even knowing their accuracy.

Thank you so much Claudia and Manjari.
Words can cause more hurt than the bullets and we should be very careful when chosing our words.
Rumours are one thing which can create havoc in one's life especially in offices where we deal with different kinds of people who have different kinds of mind sets so we should always be careful in our discussions and practically I have seen so many instances where a wrong word uttered leading to a series of problems.

Whoever gossips to you will gossip about you. ~Spanish Proverb
I have seen many such cases where in u tel sometg abt urslf to someone and the whole world knows abt u :( People dont realise that it is a matter of trust that makes any1 open up to you and if you go tel another person that thread of trust is broken.. apart from this the person's name and character becomes jus a toy for people to play with till they find something else or another gossip to divert minds..
this usualy happens in offices, housing colonies etc.. but we mostly see it perfectly polished and beautiful dressed and presented when it is shown by media,.. it can be abt the actors/ actresses, the film worl, the politicians or any particular socialite... Not once does Media cross check its authenticity nor does it re-confirm with the said person before showing the person in a poor light to the whole world..
I do think before we change the world lets start with oursleves, our families and tel ourslves its nt worth talking about others (negatively) rather concentrate on making ourslves better and our lives more wonderful :D

Absolutely marvelous analysis Priya and every body falls a victim to this gossip irrespective of their social status.Leaving celebrities and politicians who as well as thrive on these gossips to some extent, gossips in offices and colonies as you rightly pointed out are very dangerous and so many lives and careers and even for that matter families got spoiled due to these gossips.
Thank you Priya for sharing your views.
