Updates to Contacts and Pings

Admin
Posted 02-06-2009Reply

Dear members,

Here is a quick update on some changes to the "contacts" and "pings" features on HR Link.

Contacts
--------
1. A member would be able to send upto 10 contact requests per day.

2. The total number of contacts for all new members (joining today or later) has been set to 200.

3. The total number of contacts for existing members has been left as it is.

Some examples:
If a member currently has less than 200 contacts, he can build it up to 200 contacts.

If a member currently has more than 200, we have left it as it is instead of reducing it to 200.

For example, if he has 3150 contacts, he can still have all of them. But if he would like to add more contacts, he would need to remove some.

Some guidelines on using Pings
------------------------------
The pings feature has been built as an option for a member to contact another member who is not in his contact list. We request members to use it just for that and respect the privacy of the member being pinged.

When someone pings you, we suggest you first take a look at the member's profile. Please remember that you're not obligated to respond to pings. It's your choice.

Updates:

A member can

1. Ping upto 5 members per day.

2. Send upto 10 pings per day.

Hope these updates would help prevent spam. That way, we can stop spending time on fighting spam and focus on developing more useful features.

We are open to reviewing the limits on contacts and pings if members think they need more and if they can substantiate that it would be useful to the community per se.

Thank you,
RK
(On behalf of the HR Link Team).

Hello Priya,

It wouldn't.

That's why members are allowed to make contacts, but in a responsible and meaningful way.

If any member would like their contact limit increased to a reasonable level, please send me a private message. We would be happy to increase the limit for them, after we review their activity and making sure they are not involved in spamming or annoying other members.

Please remember we would like the community to grow as much as you want it to. But the goal is to foster professional networking and relationships in a healthy environment.

Consider the following. Should we let this continue to happen on HR Link?

Venkat added Latha as a contact

Venkat added Pavani as a contact

Venkat added Mayuri as a contact

Venkat added Anamika as a contact

Kiran pinged Chaya

Kiran pinged Padmavathi

Kiran pinged Kalyani

Kiran pinged Ramya

That doesn't sound meaningful or responsible. Does it?

And as you can imagine, this would go on and on, almost endlessly...

And we deactivate the profile when members report this. But another profile gets created or another member starts doing this, and the story gets repeated.

Shouldn't we rather spend time making the site better than working on deactivating spam profiles?

As I mentioned earlier, we are open to hearing from all members and revise the limits on contact requests and pings.

Please let us know what you think!

Dear Ramakrishna,

I do agree with your point of views & being a member of this huge family I would like to follow your decessions to make this place a more healthy, useful & spam free site !

I do agree, with you, accepting a contact request or replying to a ping is our choice & we are not obliged to entertain some one if we dont wish to...

But, limiting the contacts would not be helpful...e.g. I have 600+ members as my contacts, I might have never contacted many of them, or been in touch with some for very few times...but if you tell me to remove some of them from my list, just to add more, I would not be able to make a choice...I dont know ??!!

Or even limiting Pings, I cant imagine sending or receiving only 10 pings per day?!?! that too to/from 5 members only...!!!

As you have mentioned about the unwanted & irresponsible activities happening...which causes you to deactivate a member after someone reports on him/her...can we have a automated system (as we have the reporting of a topic/blocking a profile...) like after "5 reports" on a particular contact by members, that contact should be deactivated automatically, like this, you & your team need not check it manually & spend so much time on it...

I dont know how practical would this be, what do you think?!

But as I said earlier, we are all members of this big family & would do anything to help your team to protect its usefulness & dignity.

Diana

Hello Diana,

Would like to thank you for the inputs. Noted your thoughts.

About your question on receiving pings, here is a clarification:

There is NO LIMIT on how many pings you can "receive" or how many members you can receive from.

Waiting on more members to share their views.

RK

Hi Ram,

Its good to see the activities happening with HR Link. The site itself is quite slow and we often have to close the running web and login again as it gets stuckup for a long time. I dont know the exact reason behind it. But still with lot of struggle we are processing with HR link. You can limit the pings but not to 5 or 10 since its very less on numbers. Say i have come across 10 new members who are much suitable for certain opening, and where i would like to maintain a privacy between these 10 Members, But my ping limit per day is 5. Do u think limiting might be useful.

And Adding new members: The site is called HRLINK. We are here to link and network with people for our and others needs. So restricting contacts might not give any added value to the system.

I have experienced few poeple who wanted me not to share any posts with them. I have removed them from my contact list. Its just an understanding what we have to take care.

This is what my experience with HR link Says.

Any suggestions, Can let me know Ram.

Thank you Aravind for your valuable suggestions.

We would consider increasing the limit from 5 to X. We can decide on the X after we get feedback from more members.

With the number of contacts, please review my original post and the reply to Diana and let me what you think. The goal is to maintain a professional and healthy community, with meaningful and responsible interaction among members.

We are working on making the site even faster. I will post an announcement later this month, requesting members to offer feedback.

Hi RK,

I guess all are helping you out in making this network more user friendly. I am a new member so I haven't experienced any problems till now. If someone pings me and I don't feel like responding I just ignore. So I feel we shouldn't be limiting the pings.

And also I feel we should add the smileys and emoticons to make the posts more friendly and relaxing.

And also the rating icon should be disabled for the person who starts the post and we should stop updating on who rated whom as I feel that may encourage members rating mutually.

Please note that above mentioned suggestions are all my personal opinions.

Take Care and Keep Smiling Friends

Regards,
Manjari
