A comfort zone is a trap in which you feel comfortable and safe, but which stops you from growing and self-actualizing. It is a sweet poison pill. Soma. It is a tranquillizer that makes you forget that you are being subject to circumstances that, in the normal course, you ought not to enjoy.

Sigmund Freud said, as other noted psychologists and psychoanalysts have agreed, that man tends towards pleasure, towards the path of least resistance. We all want the profits but not the hard work that it takes to get them. Given a choice between something that is neutral and something that gives pleasure, we choose the latter.

The discretion to judge for yourself what you really want, what your goals are, and what it will take of you to reach your goals and then to do those things no matter how much pain they involve is breaking free from your comfort zone.

For example, for an over-weight person, breaking out of the comfort zone may mean living with the pain of low-sugar volumes that come of eating less, eating fewer carbohydrates, getting more exercise in every day, burning more calories than they consume, lifting heavier weights with every workout, progressively increasing weights and exercise duration or intensity with every workout, etc.

For someone who aspires for financial independence, it might mean getting out of employment and starting a business. Employment is a comfort zone. It demands very little of you, you can cheat your employer easily as many people do, get little or no work in, just get into employment for the steady pay cheque and invest your energies and attention elsewhere, and even then get paid. But that is a trap.

You have to figure out what your comfort zone is by asking yourself what your goals are and what you must do to reach them.
