Dear HRlink'an,

Can anyone tell me, "Can HR People be the CEO of the company??????" are they capable of performing the duties of CEO of the company, cause the job profile of any CEO would generally include strategy, profitability, cost reduction, overall management, making vision-mission-goal for the company, managing all "P" for the company etc etc etc...

Are we still look HR as a Supporting function only... or we can consider it as a profit center also???????

According to me, Yes, it is possible for a HR guy to be a CEO of the company. I read in many books that there was no HRM term, it just normal administration then after somtimes it become personnel management then HRM and now its strategic HRM so there is lot of improvement. Now there is a define difference between all these terms.

HR is responcible for all the activity happening in company, HR is the one, who hire the people on there board and at times fire from board, give training to people just to improve their productivity, co-ordinate with all dpt. At the time of boom period help the seniors to recruit the key people and in recession helps the senior to layoff people. In every board meeting HR is there, and his openion is taking into account.

So, in each and every decision of the company, HR is there. Then why till today everyone is feeling like HR is just a supporting function????? It cant be a CEO of the company.

So, HRLink'an I want to know, your openion on it, wht u feel......? Pen down your thoughts to why HR cant treated as a CEO of the company or Can HR People be the CEO of the company???

Regards

Priyanka

Nice one Priyanka and first of all let me thank you for starting this lead.
Once a profession which is confined to shop floors and union offices now has surpassed all boundaries and invaded the board rooms and corporates. There is significant change in HR which was initially started as a function of managing people during industrial revolution and aftermath. All must have learned about famous hawthorne experiments during their student days and how the skill study and time and motion study have come into picture which are nothing but an offshoot of HR.Now HR has reached the stage of a strategic partner where most of the decisions being taken at board level are centering around the Human Resources-the biggest and greatest asset of any organization and why CEOs alone the HR professionals can usurp better positons than CEO and play a key role in development of any organization. As rightly said by you Priyanka....the importance of HR has been widely recognized and survival of any organization depends on health of its employees and for that the HR professional has to play a significant role unlike in earlier times. In the wake of knowledge management and talent management and evolution of knowledge worker, the HR has gained more importance and no doubt any HR professional can become a CEO and even better than that.
Thank you again Priyanka.

Cheers!
Pradeep

Once a profession... See Pradeep's complete reply

Very well said Pradeep, I fully agree to you.
But still people today feels that, generally student opt for HR, cause they are not good in numbers (Finance) and dont wanna hectic job (Marketing) thats why they move into HR. Its nothing but the just an another option.

Now, its everyone's perception that, HR cant plan for the entire business they are very week in numbers, they have hardly any knowledge about the market. HR is only good in their own field thats it...... this is the people's perception.

What do you think, is it still correct....???? cause you may have more experience than me.... what is your general observation about it

Regards
Priyanka

Hi Priyanka,

First of all, we need to understand that we are not talking abt specifics here, but in general. Also we are talking abt diverse sectors from highly skilled to low skilled.

A CEO needs to manage a lot of areas, including the basic one like Finance, Sales & Marketing, Production, R&D, Logistics, HR etc. In traditional companies, CEOs or even HR heads were preferred to be technical. But that mindset is changing now adays, and more and more HR people are migrating to overall management roles. The knowledge base in those areas is required to be more broad and hence more finance & marketing people have had a stronghold on that, but not anymore.

Thanks, Priyanka, for the thoughts.

The question has to be answered, I believe, by looking at what a CEO is expected to do, namely, the following :
1. set and communicate the direction
2. build a team
3. manipulate the resources (the budget in particular) &
4. create a culture.

An HR professional m i g h t have, over the years, honed her skills in functions 2 and 4 ; she will have to, perforce, pick up the other two somewhere along the line.

Keep in mind, though, that a CEO's job-orientation is not the sum total of the inputs from the various departments but is contextually different, even within an organization, in terms of time and cycle.

There is no reason, therefore, why an HR professional cannot groom herself to be accepted as a CEO.

But the bad news is that an 'efficient' CEO is still a rare commodity all over the world ! ( I'm sure you all will have examples at hand to justify this statement ! ).

Best Regards,

John

Priyanka,

CEO can be any one. It again depends on the Management Abilities, communication skills, thoughts, resources, business development strategies, Art to play with the risk factors including finances and public interest is what a CEO or rather a Good CEO is made up of.

Yes, HR people can be promoted or can be CEO of the company. Well, what i believe is No CEO is a CEO from the Womb or from birth. They imbibe the required qualities from their EDUCATION and EXPERIENCES.

A good CEO have to have a good PR skills and PR is basic HR professional Characteristics.

So yes in my belief HR Manager or HR people can be CEO or Board management.

Thank you,
Harsh

Priyanka,

These are the 5 major characteristics of a CEO.

1. Personal insight.
2. Resourcefulness
3. Courage
4. Willingness to look at risk
5. Foresight.

Hey Priyanka,

First of all loads of thanks for starting this topic.

Well secondly, will tell you to read an article in this forum only that is

Multi-Tasking is becoming more essential...!

And offcourse Priyanka why not an HR can be a CEO....

At pesent HR are spreading their wings to wider area, now they are not confine only to recruitment and selection only as such thry are actively taking part in all other functions of company.

And this is myth that they are scared of figures, u must have heard the term HR Auditing etc which all signifies new terms and functions of HR infact they are doing salary processing also.

If we see minutely then all the important func are done through HR or by HR whether it is salary negotiation or selecting the right candidates.

I am not telling that every HR can become CEO of co. , one who deserves to be their will be their as such what is CEO...The executive who is responsible for a company's operations and the one who is responsible for the co. benifits.

If the traits of CEO is present in an HR then y not he or she can.

The only thing required is the commitments towards the company.

This is all what I feel.

Warm regards,
Prtiyanka Singh
