Talking about all this is strictly out of bounds at work. While you are trying to build a strong bond with your co-workers on a personal level, it’s always advisable to draw a line. Think twice before you speak and trust anyone. You need to keep certain things to yourself at times.

Here’s a list of things you shouldn’t reveal at your workplace. It could get in the way of your career:

1. Incompetency: There may be instances when your team member has not worked sincerely as you have. Some of your co-workers might absolutely be lazy at work and still manage to get away with things. Avoid complaining about such people as it might make you seem like the insecure person. Discuss it out with your boss about the incompetency of your colleague and find out ways on how to improve the work culture.

2. Salary: How much money you make is not your colleagues’ business. As soon as your colleagues know how much money you make, they might start comparing. Just in case you earn more than them, it might lead to negativity. No matter how hard you work, everything you do will be considered against your income.

3. Religious beliefs: Religion is subjective and confronting people with strong core beliefs can only hamper your relationship with that person. Some of your thoughts on their religion can even come across as insulting. When this topic is spoken, make sure you’re listening without judging anyone because you don’t want your opinion to lead to conflicts.

4. Goal: If you’re working very hard to get that promotion or move to another team, you might want to keep it hush. While everyone is focusing on team goals, you need not focus only on individual goals alone. People might just have a wrong assumption that you have different motives to succeed.

5. Job hunting: Don’t tell anyone you’re planning to quit before you’ve signed your new offer letter. Wait until you’ve found that job before you tell anyone. Just in case, you decide to stay back, your boss or colleagues might not treat you the same way because they already know you were planning to quit your job.
