Mumbai, Feb 13, 2009:"Clearly, most organizations are downsizing during trouble, people are being driven out. There are enough reports in the market on how many, etc, etc. Laying off people is not the only way to deal with downturn. Organizations should have a long-time view. They should invest in system and continue to invest in people in cycles. A good organization will wait for the market to restore and employ the cultivated talent to optimum use."
Virtual benches too can frustrate employees, said Cox. "It is a part of the downturn, and is a company-specific issue. Skilled HR functions will know how to manage those employees."
Even as companies reeling under the global economic slowdown are looking at cutting their IT budgets, specialist recruitment and HR services firms will continue to invest in technology. Their reason for the continuous investment - to improve business efficiency, provide value proposition to their global clients, and also quality talent.
So, are the recruitment firms moving away from their slogan "People make a difference?"
"No," said Cox. "We as an industry are not always technology oriented. It is people who make a difference in recruitments."
But the scenario is changing. Even HAYS is investing a lot on back office infrastructure. "We`re currently in the middle of a rollout of leading-edge recruitment software tool in our UK office. We`re also using communication tools, and, as we grow, we will increasingly use these tools across offices."
Cox said that IT is very important for HR organizations and plays a very critical role in administration tasks, records, staff development and training, people development, etc.
"The HR and the management have to be tech-aware. IT is a key tool because it helps HRs and recruitment firms provide value proposition to clients, enable the firm to track top-level candidates, effectively put the candidate in client view, etc. Although the information is from the Web, it can be moved into proprietary databases for further use."
So what is the way forward? "The way forward is proper use of these tools. Companies today do not look at HR for day-to-day support. The organization is being taken seriously. It is no longer `lady in personnel`. With effective use of IT applications and tools, HR can efficiently draft future strategies, offer solutions for clients - both external and internal - employ best quality people, gain competitive advantage, etc," said Cox.
And what now are the requirements of the IT companies, what kind of skill sets are they looking at while employing people? "IT companies are looking at good technical skill sets. They want people who have all the skills around Web tools, customer relationship management (CRM), anything that gives them an edge. Training in terms of IT-as-a-service is very important for BPO companies, and the telecom sector."
And although hiring across the boards is slowing down, people are more cautious with their investments, enterprises are still interested in talent with high-end skill sets. "The focus on volume has decreased."

Agreed. But see, if we have proper resourcing system in place, there will be less chances wherein we will keep existing employees with that experience on bench and recruit new employees.
